.xxx is a generic top-level domain strongly associated with adult-oriented content. It originally launched as a sponsored TLD with a defined community framework, but its current ICANN Registry Agreement, effective in 2024, moved .xxx to the standard Base Registry Agreement as a non-sponsored gTLD.

That history matters because older descriptions of .xxx may still refer to community membership or legacy eligibility rules. Those legacy registrant eligibility requirements are not maintained in the current agreement, although the registry continues to carry public-interest and anti-abuse commitments.

The extension remains a highly specific branding choice. It can clearly signal adult-oriented material and may also be relevant to defensive brand management, but it is unlikely to suit an organization that wants a neutral or broadly family-facing identity.

Registration is generally available through participating registrars under the current registry framework, subject to registry policies, reserved names, rights protection and applicable laws.
