.sydney is the geographic generic top-level domain for Sydney and is intended for registrants with a qualifying connection to New South Wales. It is therefore different from a globally open city-themed brand word.

The current registration policy requires an applicant to satisfy one of several eligibility routes. New South Wales entities can qualify through an Australian business registration linked to an NSW address, while Australian citizens or residents can qualify with a valid address in the state. Associated entities can also qualify when they provide relevant products, services, events, activities or training connected with New South Wales, with additional rules governing the domain name they choose.

The eligibility requirement continues after registration. The registry may request evidence and can take action if the registrant no longer qualifies. For Sydney businesses, tourism, local services and community projects, the extension gives a strong city identity.

VYR classifies .sydney as restricted because registration and renewal require a continuing NSW-related nexus.
