.radio is a community generic top-level domain reserved for people and organizations with a genuine connection to the radio world. Its purpose is more specific than simply using “radio” as an attractive word in a brand.

The registry's published guidance says that .radio is available to applicants with a bona fide nexus to radio. This can include radio stations and broadcasters as well as other legitimate parts of the radio community. Registration requests are subject to validation, and special naming rules can apply to terms that are significant to the community.

That makes the extension useful for stations, programs, radio professionals, associations and related services that can demonstrate a real connection. It also helps reduce speculative registrations of names belonging to established radio organizations.

A .radio domain does not by itself prove broadcasting authorization, frequency rights or official status with a regulator. VYR classifies .radio as restricted because a genuine radio-community nexus and registry validation are explicit registration conditions.
