About .pro
.pro is a generic top-level domain built around the idea of being a professional or a pro. It has an unusual policy history: the extension was originally restricted to credentialed professionals, but ICANN's 2015 renewal of the .pro registry agreement replaced those older credential-based registration restrictions with the standard public-interest commitments used for newer generic TLDs.
That history explains why IANA still labels .pro as a restricted generic top-level domain even though the former professional-credential eligibility rules are no longer the practical barrier they once were. Today, a .pro name is generally obtainable through participating registrars when the name is available and the registration complies with current registry and ICANN policies.
The extension can suit consultants, specialists, tradespeople, agencies, independent professionals and services that want the word “pro” to be part of their positioning. It can also work for products with a professional or advanced edition, although in that case the full domain should make it clear whether “pro” describes a person, a service or a product tier.
Because .pro carries a quality or professional signal, the domain itself should not be treated as proof of a licence, certification or professional status. Visitors still need to evaluate the person or organization behind a website, and registrants remain responsible for trademarks and any profession-specific laws that apply to their activities.
