.ngo is a community generic top-level domain operated by Public Interest Registry for non-governmental organizations. It is not an ordinary open organizational extension.

Public Interest Registry requires registrants to certify that they meet its NGO eligibility criteria. These include acting in the public interest, being nonprofit or nonprofit-focused, maintaining limited government influence, operating independently, being active and structured, and acting lawfully. PIR can audit registrations and request evidence of NGO status.

The registry also limits eligible domain names to names connected with the organization, such as its name, acronym, mission or activities. A registrant that fails an audit or no longer meets the requirements can lose the registration.

That makes .ngo useful for organizations that genuinely qualify and want an online identity specifically associated with the NGO community.

VYR classifies .ngo as restricted because eligibility and name selection are governed by formal community rules rather than simple availability.
