.net is one of the original generic top-level domains and was introduced in the early Domain Name System with networks in mind. Its name comes from “network”, and it has long been associated with internet infrastructure, connectivity, hosting and technology.

That technical association still gives .net a recognizable identity, but registration is not limited to network operators. Today it is also used by businesses, software projects, online communities and organizations that either prefer the word “net” or find their first-choice .com unavailable.

A .net domain can make particular sense when the name itself relates to networks, digital services or connected systems. For a general consumer brand, however, it is worth considering how familiar your audience is with the extension and whether another TLD better matches the project.
