.name is a generic top-level domain created specifically for personal identities. Unlike most modern open gTLDs, its registry rules include eligibility requirements tied to personal names and personal identifiers.

Under the .name Registry Agreement, a qualifying personal name can include a legal name, a name by which a person is commonly known, a nickname, a pseudonym, a stage name or another personal identifier. The namespace has supported both second-level registrations such as example.name and, historically, third-level personal-name formats.

This makes .name a natural option for personal websites, portfolios, biographies and individual email identities. It is less suitable for a generic company or product name that has no legitimate connection to a person's name or recognized personal identifier.

Because .name has specific eligibility rules, VYR classifies its registration policy as restricted rather than open. Prospective registrants should confirm that their chosen string fits the registry's Personal Name requirements and should also consider trademark and other third-party rights.
