.mobi is a generic top-level domain created with mobile internet use in mind. The name is an abbreviation of “mobile,” so it remains easy to understand for websites, products and services that want to emphasize phones, mobility or mobile-first experiences.

The extension comes from an earlier period of the web when mobile devices often received specially optimized versions of websites. Modern responsive design has reduced the need for a separate mobile domain, but the word “mobi” can still be useful as branding for mobile apps, telecom services, device tools, mobility products and projects where the mobile context is central.
