.la is the country-code top-level domain for the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The Lao National Internet Center operates the national namespace, and the registry makes second-level .la names available to registrants in Laos and around the world through accredited registrars.

The extension also has a second, non-geographic branding identity. The official .LA registry notes that it has been marketed for Los Angeles since 2000 because “LA” is a widely recognized abbreviation for the city. That use does not change the DNS classification: .la remains the country-code domain assigned to Laos.

A .la domain can therefore make sense for a Lao business or organization, or for a Los Angeles-focused project that deliberately uses the city abbreviation. Those are very different audiences, so the surrounding name and website should make the intended meaning obvious.

There is no general local-presence restriction for standard second-level .la registration. Names are handled under registry rules and can still be reserved, unavailable, premium or affected by trademark and other legal rights.
