.it is the country-code top-level domain for Italy and is managed by Registro .it at the Institute of Informatics and Telematics of the Italian National Research Council.

Registration has a geographic eligibility rule. Registro .it states that a registrant must be an adult and have citizenship, residence or a commercial headquarters in the European Economic Area, the Vatican City State, San Marino, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. An eligible registrant can register more than one .it domain, subject to availability and the registry's naming rules.

The extension is a natural choice for Italian businesses, organizations, cultural projects and services aimed at an Italian audience. The letters “IT” can also suggest information technology in English, but that branding interpretation does not remove the registry's eligibility requirement.

Some names are reserved, including parts of the official geographic structure and certain network-related labels.

VYR classifies .it as restricted because not every worldwide applicant is eligible to register directly.
