.in is the country-code top-level domain for India and is managed by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). It provides a direct geographic identity for websites connected with India, while the registry also permits second-level .in registrations from parties worldwide without a nationality or local-presence qualification.

The extension is a natural choice for Indian businesses, local services, organizations, media, communities and international companies whose Indian market presence is important enough to be visible in the domain. The two-letter ending is also short, but its clearest value comes from the association with India.

Registration being open worldwide does not mean every type of domain-market activity is permitted. NIXI's current 2026 advisory states that auctioning, bidding, speculative sale, or facilitation of auction of .IN domain names is strictly non-permissible under the registry's rules. Anyone acquiring .in primarily as a speculative asset should review the current registry policies before proceeding.
