.fr is the country-code top-level domain for France and is managed by Afnic. It is one of the clearest choices for businesses, organizations and individuals targeting a French audience.

Registration is geographically restricted. Afnic states that individuals must reside, and legal entities must have their registered office or main establishment, in a European Union member state or in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. The eligibility requirement applies within Afnic's naming framework and can be checked by the registry.

The rule is broader than French residence alone, so many European registrants qualify, but applicants based only outside the eligible area cannot simply register .fr as an unrestricted global domain.
