About .foo

.foo is a generic top-level domain built around a classic placeholder term used by programmers and computer scientists. In code examples, “foo” often stands in for a temporary variable, function, object or other item whose real name is not important.

Google Registry positions .foo as a playground for testing, sandboxing, side projects and digital experimentation. Its technical culture makes it especially natural for developers, demos, prototypes, open-source tools and personal engineering projects, although the namespace is not restricted to programmers.

Google's current public guidance says anyone ready to build can register a .foo domain. The TLD is also on the HSTS preload list, so HTTPS is mandatory for web use.

A .foo domain does not indicate that software is experimental, secure or officially associated with any programming language or platform unless the site itself establishes that relationship.

VYR classifies .foo as open, subject to Google Registry and ICANN policies, reserved names and third-party rights.
