.asia

.asia is a sponsored generic top-level domain created for the Asia-Pacific internet community. Unlike an unrestricted geographic-sounding gTLD, it retains a Charter Eligibility Requirement designed to maintain a real nexus with the DotAsia Sponsor Community.

The extension can be useful for regional businesses, organizations, media, communities and projects that operate across several Asian or Asia-Pacific markets and do not want to identify with only one country. It can also serve companies expanding into the region when the website genuinely represents an Asia-Pacific presence or relationship.

DotAsia states that people and businesses around the world can register .asia, but they must still satisfy the Charter Eligibility Requirement. Current policy allows this through an eligible Asia-Pacific contact or address, or by attesting to an established, sought or nexus relationship and presence within the Sponsor Community. Since a 2023 registry-system change, the old CED contact data is no longer collected in the same way, but the underlying eligibility policy remains in force.

For that reason VYR classifies .asia as restricted. Prospective registrants should review the current DotAsia policy and registrar workflow rather than treating the extension as globally unrestricted simply because applicants may be located outside Asia.
