.aero is a sponsored, community-based top-level domain for the global aviation community. Unlike a general aviation-themed gTLD, registration eligibility is part of the namespace's formal charter.

ICANN's current .aero Specification 12 restricts the TLD to people, entities and government agencies that support air transport or facilitate the transactions needed for air transport. The charter lists groups such as airlines, airports, aerospace companies, air freight and logistics, aviation clubs, consultants, education and media providers, suppliers, civil aviation authorities, ground handlers, licensed maintenance professionals and pilots.

The registry can define category-specific eligibility and name-selection rules, so applicants should check the requirements for their aviation role before attempting registration.

A .aero domain can provide a strong industry identity, but it does not replace professional licenses, operating certificates or regulatory approvals.

VYR classifies .aero as restricted because eligibility is expressly limited to the aviation community.
